RIVERSIDE, Iowa — It wasn't as cold as it could have been for a January day in Iowa, but for the 40-some folks participating in the 2012 HWC Arctic Plunge, it was plenty cold enough.
Some big names in Hawkeye sports got all wet for a good cause, including head football coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant football coaches LeVar Woods and Chris Doyle, and head wrestling coach Tom Brands and his assistants Terry Brands, Mike Zadick, Danny Song, and Kurt Backes.
The guys whom the fundraiser will benefit — the Hawkeye Wrestling Club athletes training for this year's Olympic Team Trials — also took a dip in the 30-degree water, including Daniel Dennis and Luke Lofthouse. All told, the event raised more than $25,000 for the HWC.
Special thanks go to these folks who provided support:
- Dan Kehl at Riverside Casino and Golf Club for the great location and VERY cold pond!
- Riverside Fire Department/Rescue Squad (there to save our butts if necessary!)
- Mondo's Bread Garden Market (all the great coffee, hot cocoa, tea, etc)
- Vickie Mincer at Mincer Catering in Lone Tree, IA (fabulous chili & soup)
In case you missed seeing the event live, we got some great media coverage as well. Check these sites out for photos and video:
